2010 Recital Information

  1. The 2010 Dance Classics performance will be held on Saturday, June 12, 2010 at the California City High School Gym. Curtain is 7:00 p.m. California City High School is located at 8567 Bolden Drive in California City. From California City Blvd, turn north on Neuralia Street and turn right on Poppy Street, turn left on Rusche Street and into the parking area in front of the gym.
  2. Crew is called for 12 noon on Saturday, June 12. We will meet at Mojave Movement Arts Center to pack and transport costumes, light and sound equipment, and flooring to the performance venue. Crew is anyone who can help set up the stage, dressing areas, and audience seating. We have access to the performance site at 12:00 noon.
  3. Performers are called for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 12. Rehearsal begins at 4:15 p.m. There will be a dinner break from 5:30 to 6:00 p.m. Food is not permitted in the dressing areas or in the gymnasium.
  4. A preliminary program attached for you to check the spelling of your name and the order of the show. If your name is spelled correctly, please initial it. If corrections are needed, please write them neatly in the margin.
  5. All crew and performers are called at 6:00 p.m. Dressing space is limited, so performers should be almost “performance ready”. Please do not bring valuables to the performance. Watches, rings, and other jewelry will not be worn on stage, and there is the possibility of loss of those important items if left in the dressing area. Loretta Warren, Jane Riding, and Caroline Vellios are chaperones backstage; they need help with the young children (makeup, dressing, and “wrangling”).
  6. The house will open at 6:30 p.m. and the curtain will rise at 7:00 p.m. Debbie Crocoll is in charge of the house; if you need tickets and/or can help her manage the house on the night of the show, please talk to her. Jennifer Cook is in charge of the refreshment table; offers of assistance should be made directly to her. Please note that tickets are required for the show and that cookies or similar treats are requested for the refreshment table.
  7. Performers in costume are not permitted in the audience. Performers should wear street clothes to the theatre and change into costume for the rehearsal/performance. Costumes provided by the studio will be hanging in the dressing area; costumes should be returned to the costume rack after performance. Personal items used in performance should be labeled, shoes especially. Children who have completed their performance duties and have changed into street clothes may join the audience during intermission.
  8. Flash photography is prohibited during the performance. The flash can distract the performers and interfere with their performance. Also, you will enjoy the show more if you watch it rather than videotape it. Usually a parent volunteers to tape the show and make copies. If you are such a person and would like to video the show, please let me know.
  9. Classes resume July 5, 2010. The studio will be closed for 2 weeks following the recital. Class schedules will be available soon.
Rehearsal notes
  1. Full cast rehearsals are called for Thursdays, June 3, and June 10 at 6:30 pm. Tap and jazz dances will be rehearsed separately.
  2. Rehearsal on June 10 is a dress rehearsal. We will need to complete minor costume adjustments, such as changing elastic and replacing hooks and eyes and ironing before the dress rehearsal.

Although not specified, most performers will under-dress their costumes; that is, they will wear an appropriately-colored leotard underneath their costume to help hold up their tights and to provide a measure of modesty. Example: Mice should wear a light or white tank or camisole leotard underneath their white suits. The Dolls and the Girls in the Attic likewise. No performer will wear jewelry unless it is part of the costume. An exception can be made for one pair only of small stud earrings.

Fashion manicures are not permitted, nor are pedicures if dancing barefoot. Clear or nude polish only.

All performers will wear light stage makeup. Very fair children must have their eyebrows and lashes darkened. Eye shadow is optional; if you choose to wear it, choose the color carefully so you don’t end up with “black eyes”. All dancers will wear cheek and lip color—a rosy pink is appropriate for young children. Fashion colors, shimmers and frosts do not show well on stage and should be avoided except for special effects. Tattoos must be covered.

Hair is worn fastened securely away from the face in a ballet bun or style specified for individual characters. Hair spray and/or gel are necessary to control the “wispies”.

Performers should wear or bring street clothes to the theatre. Performers in costume are not permitted in the audience. Food and drink, water excepted, are not allowed in the dressing rooms or backstage. Performers are not permitted to eat while in costume. Family and friends are not permitted backstage and in the dressing rooms, unless they have been assigned as dressers or wranglers, curtain pullers, etc. Parents: if you know that your child cannot be away from you for 30 to 40 minutes, you must let me know; I will give you an assignment backstage as a dresser or wrangler so your child can feel secure that you are nearby. Cell phones and pages must be turned off or set on vibrate.

Intermission

Intermission is 15 minutes. Prior to intermission, we honor our graduating seniors, if any, and our dancers who have earned a place in a summer intensive study program.

Students who perform in the 2nd act only, should come backstage during the intermission to prepare for their dances.

Still have questions? Veterans of past productions can help. If I appear to be too busy, you can ask Debbie Crocoll, Loretta Warren, Sandy Johnson, Marla McCully, Kathy Newman… Do the rules seem arbitrary or unnecessary? We follow standard practices of professional theatre.

I have no record of payment from the following: Svejda, Newman, McCully, Marambe, Vermillion, DeRobles; check your records please and set me straight.
